Dr. James R. White has “officially” announced that he will be working on two books in 2011. He writes, “What Every Christian Needs to Know about the Qur’an will be my contribution to the effort to educate, motivate, and edify the Body of Christ in the area of Islamic evangelism and apologetics.” Keeping in mind the current popularity of Islam it is my opinion that these books will be some of the most significant contributions to Christian apologetics of this century. Dr. White uses his apologetic both on the street and in public debate with the result that it is well-tested in terms of soundness and persuasiveness. It has often been noted that he shows a familiarity with his many opponents’ positions that comes only as the result of years of study and interaction with primary source material and adherents. An example of such scholarship is found in his working toward learning Arabic in addition to studying the Quran and Muslim commentaries. It is certainly worth noting as well that Dr. White is a presuppositionalist and generally follows and develops – whether always consciously or not – the method suggested by Dr. Greg L. Bahnsen for engaging Islam. Finally, Dr. White produces his works for the church. Many of the most popular books found on his website provide excellent examples of this aforementioned scholarly work aimed toward the edification of even the layperson. I recommend these books to you and hope that you will keep an eye out for the forthcoming books mentioned at the beginning of the post as well.
