  • Why Atheism Is True

Atheism, like other false systems of thought, has enough content with the ‘ring of truth’ to it that some people are attracted to it. Of course atheism is not monolithic, but the following themes are prevalent.

    1.       Atheism rejects moral-ism.

Atheists think it is absurd to follow the whimsical preferences of an egotistical deity. Christians must acknowledge that the commands of God flow from His loving nature and are for His glory and our good.

Atheists hate the very notion of having a bunch of ‘rules’ forced upon them concerning how to act, think, and live. Christians must acknowledge that …

  • Gill on Sheol

Another name or word by which it is expressed, is Sheol, which is often rendered the “grave”; as in Genesis 42:38 and 44:31 and should be where it is sometimes translated “hell,” as in Psalm 16:10 yet in some places it seems as if it could not be understood of that, but of the state or place of punishment of the wicked; as in Psalm 9:17. “The wicked shall be turned into hell”: now to be turned into the earth, or to be laid in the grave, is not peculiar to wicked men; it is the common lot of all,

  • Gill – of the Final State of the Wicked

It is called destruction, or Abaddon, which is the name of the king of the bottomless pit, (Rev. 9:11 which signifies a destroyer, and is rendered destruction in Job 26:6, Proverbs 27:20 and 15:11 where “hell and destruction” are mentioned together, as signifying the same thing, the one being explanative of the other. Indeed the grave, which the word used for hell sometimes signifies, is called the pit of destruction and corruption, because bodies laid in it corrupt and waste away; but here it seems to signify the place of the punishment of the wicked, where body and soul are

  • The Fear of Man

Even as Christians, we still have everyday entrapments and susceptibilities that entangle us. In these things we constantly must go back to the Cross of Jesus Christ. For instance, Jacob commanded his household to put away foreign gods, and to purify themselves and change their garments  (Gen. 35:2) . Subsequently he took their idols and buried them under the oak tree near Shechem (v.4). Our Father who is in heaven takes our idols in the same way, and He has buried them under the tree at Golgatha (Gal. 3:13-14, Col 2:12-14).

If we are truly honest with ourselves, then one  …

  • Kevin DeYoung at Together for the Gospel

I intend to write a lengthier post about highlights from the recent Together for the Gospel conference but all of the material from that conference is not up just yet. Those of you who are critical of T4G may want to stay tuned for that post.

In the meantime I want to post Kevin DeYoung’s sermon. It is well worth listening to!

  • Conversion Stories

1  And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2  in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

    (Ephesians 2.1-3)

Conversion stories are all the rage in our “postmodern” context. Unbelievers thus pride themselves on claiming to have once been …

  • New Atheism, Intentional Ignorance, and Apathy

Over at erstwhile atheist blogger Paul Jenkins’ site, he posted the following:

At Choosing Hats, contributor McFormtist considers what constitutes successful apologetics. As the type of apologetic usually in question at Choosing Hats is “covenantal” or “presuppositional” apologetics, and my own limited encounters with presuppositionalists have led me to the conclusion that presuppositonal apologetics is spectacularly unsuccessful in the declared purpose of apologetics in general, naturally my interest was piqued.

Early on in the piece comes this:

Our theology dictates to us that it is God who changes men’s hearts. As Reformed Christians, we understand that God in

  • The Substance of Success in Apologetics

The call to be an Apologist, or a defender of the faith, is not something reserved for seminarians or pastors, or even in general, the smartest among us. Rather, everyone who is called by the name of Christ possesses the responsibility, the burden, and the privilege of defending the truth of God against any contradiction to it. Indeed, we are each called to “Be diligent to present [ourselves] approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

Apart from pragmatic considerations with regard to Apologetics which are …

  • Paul Jenkins, Naughty Children, and Hell

    Introduction

Somewhat understandably, our friend Paul Jenkins categorizes the discussion of, “whether Hell is ‘eternal conscious punishment’ on the one hand, or ‘annihilation’ on the other” as, “Not just piffle, but risible piffle.”

The alternative that occurs most obviously to me is, “Hell doesn’t exist — it’s a horror story told to children to stop them being naughty.”

One might question how Paul is so dogmatically certain that hell doesn’t exist. Of course it does not matter how certain Paul feels he is with regard to the alleged non-existence of hell if hell does in fact exist. It does …

  • A Reading Plan To Learn Covenantal/Presuppositional Apologetics

The Choosing Hats team has created a new page to be used as a reading plan or curriculum to learn the Covenantal/Presuppositional Apologetic method. It is broken up into three fields of study: Theology, Apologetics, and Philosophy.

    Check it out: https://choosinghats.org/reading-plan/
